You're allowed to write like this?

On Tuesday 1st March while he was idling, Kit decided to ask Twitter the following question:

What was the first book you read that made you think, 'Oh wow, you’re allowed to write like this?'

The response was electric, with more varied suggestions and reasons than we expected. For a long time, no one book was put forward twice. It was a fascinating insight into how the discovery of a book can change the way you think about literature. Is it a certain age that you find these awe struck moment? Is it a certain style of writing? An exposure to writing that was never around you as a child, at home or in school? Or is it simply just that this particular book came to you at the right time, in the right place?

The answer will be personal, subjective and never definitive. However, what did come from this social media explosion was an incredible reading list. Below are all the tweets posted in response to Kit's original question. There are a couple of repeats, but that's all the more interesting!
